What the contract data covers, how it is counted, and what it leaves out.

01What is covered
Contract figures cover every federal prime contract award since fiscal year 2008 to 47 covered companies and their subsidiaries, from USAspending.gov. That means definitive contracts, purchase orders, delivery orders and BPA calls; grants, loans and subcontracts are not included.

02How awards are counted
An award belongs to a company when its recipient, or the recipient's reported parent, is one of the company's registrations (UEIs). Each award is credited to the company of its latest action, so an award follows an acquisition, and to the agency and contracting office of its first action, the buyer (later changes are often administered by DCMA). A joint venture is its own organization: its awards count for it alone, never in any partner's totals, and it is listed on each partner's page with its members and a public source.
- Consolidated
- Figures include every subsidiary.
- Direct
- Figures count only the company's own reviewed registrations.
Obligations are the sum of signed contract actions from FY2008 on. Earlier years are not in the data, so long-running awards can show less than their all-time total. Each award's whole obligation is attributed to its latest agency, program, product code and place of performance.
03Source quirks, kept as published
USAspending records are shown as published. The latest build counted:
- Awards whose net obligation is negative (de-obligations exceed obligations)
- 28,663
- Awards whose FY2008+ total differs from USAspending's all-time award total
- 355,615
- Awards whose current end date is before their start date
- 21,312
- Awards without a title
- 255
- Awards without a place-of-performance country
- 98
04Beyond contracts

Where the picture is incomplete
- Prime contracts cover the covered companies only; subcontracts, grants and classified work are not in USAspending.
- Private companies may not disclose funding, revenue, customers or production volumes.
- Supplier relationships and material dependencies are documented selectively, not as complete bills of materials.
- Lifetime costs, operating costs and production capacity are unevenly disclosed.
A missing record means DefDex has not documented it, not that it does not exist. Source publication dates, event dates and review dates answer different questions: older evidence may still be accurate.
