Using DefDex

DefDex (“DefDex”, “we”, “us”) runs defdex.io, a reference to who gets paid in defense tech. By using the site or creating an account you agree to these terms and to the Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use the site.

Accounts

Most of DefDex is public. Some features, such as exploring individual award records, need a free account. You can sign up with Google or with an email address and password.

  • Give accurate information and keep your sign-in details secure. You are responsible for what happens under your account.
  • An account is for one person. Don't share it or create accounts by automated means.
  • Tell us promptly at the contact address below if you think someone else has used your account.
  • You can ask us to delete your account at any time; the Privacy Policy says how.

Accounts are free today. If we ever offer paid features, we will describe their terms before you can buy them.

Acceptable Use

Use DefDex lawfully and in a way that keeps it available to everyone. In particular, don't:

  • get around sign-in, access controls, rate limits or other protections, or try to reach another person's account or data;
  • crawl or download the site in a way that degrades it for others, or ignore robots.txt;
  • probe, scan or test the site for vulnerabilities without our written permission (report security issues to us instead);
  • upload or send malicious code, spam or anything unlawful through the site's forms;
  • misrepresent DefDex as endorsing you, your company or your product.

We may limit, suspend or close access, including an account, that breaks these rules or puts the site or its readers at risk.

The Data

DefDex reconciles public records, such as USAspending, budget documents and official company and government pages, with our own research. We label every dollar as requested, enacted, an announced ceiling or obligated, and link the sources. The methodology explains how.

Public records contain errors and gaps, and so can our reconciliation. DefDex is a research reference. It is not financial, investment, legal, procurement or export-control advice. Check the primary sources before you rely on a figure for a decision. If you spot a mistake, tell us; fixes are logged on the corrections page.

Quoting and Reuse

Government records remain public. The site's text, design, and its compilation, labels and linking of records are DefDex's work. You may quote, cite and link to DefDex pages with attribution to DefDex and a link to the page. Please ask us before republishing substantial parts of the site or its database, or building a product on them.

Other Services

DefDex links to outside sites and relies on other services, such as Google for sign-in and analytics. Their own terms and policies govern your use of them, and we aren't responsible for their content or practices.

Disclaimers

DefDex is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no warranties, express or implied, including that the site will be accurate, complete, current, uninterrupted or error-free, or fit for a particular purpose.

Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, DefDex is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, revenue, data or business opportunities, arising from your use of, or inability to use, the site or its data. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

Changes and Ending Access

We may change the site, or these terms, at any time. When the terms change, we update the effective date above; if a change is significant and you have an account, we will tell you by email. Continuing to use DefDex after a change means you accept the new terms.

You can stop using DefDex and delete your account at any time.

Contact
