Biothreat detection
Detecting and characterizing biological threats and developing countermeasures.
Assessment
Case for · why it matters
Cheaper and more capable biological engineering tools lower the barrier to creating pathogens, while detection and countermeasure pipelines remain slow and fragmented. AI sequence models and sequencing-based surveillance of wastewater, air and clinical samples promise faster characterization and countermeasure design, and federal agencies including DoD, BARDA and DARPA are funding such work.
Case against · the skeptic’s view
RAND's 2024 red-team study found current large language models did not measurably increase the operational risk of biological attack planning, which tempers the AI-enabled threat case. Analysts also flag the difficulty of reaching the sensitivity and specificity needed for regulatory approval and the absence of fully integrated real-time threat systems.
