Drones, sensors, counter-UAS and networked command posts have made electrical power a constraint on combat units, and oversized diesel generators waste fuel and expose positions through noise and heat. Army brigade experiments with battery modules, inverters and solar arrays let teams run for days without generators.
Case against · the skeptic’s view
The Army's acquisition chief for maneuver says simply adding batteries overloads soldiers, and its CTO notes liquid fuel is still the most power-dense way to move energy. Battery-based microgrids also add lithium-ion supply-chain exposure, and most new systems are still in exercises and prototype buys.
