Loitering munitions

Uncrewed aircraft that search for and strike targets, expending themselves in the attack.

Assessment

Case for · why it matters

Loitering munitions give small units precision strike beyond line of sight, and the U.S. is buying them through several programs at once: Replicator, Army LASSO and Marine Corps OPF-L. Newer entrants such as Heaviside pitch sub-meter accuracy in jammed, GPS-denied conditions at a lower unit price than legacy munitions.

Case against · the skeptic’s view

Battlefield accuracy can fall well short of advertised figures under jamming; Heaviside's own CEO says munitions marketed at one to two meters are seeing 8 to 50 meters. Small warheads limit effect, and hard combat data remains scarce.
