Nuclear Engineering and Operations Software
Software built for the nuclear industry's engineering, licensing, construction and plant-operations work, including nuclear-trained AI search and drafting tools, corrective-action and outage-planning automation, and construction-management platforms. It supports the people who run plants and does not control reactors.
Assessment
Case for · why it matters
Nuclear plants run on regulated paperwork. Diablo Canyon has more than 9,000 operating and maintenance procedures. With Atomic Canyon's Neutron, now available to all 1,300 plant workers, PG&E says a team collected the documents for a safety-valve investigation in 40 days instead of about 180. Nuclearn says its tools are used at more than 65 reactors. The Nuclear Company and Palantir are building an AI construction system aimed at nuclear projects' chronic cost and schedule overruns, which matter as new reactors are planned for grids and military bases.
Case against · the skeptic’s view
These tools work beside plant operations, not inside them. Atomic Canyon's CEO says he does not want AI running a nuclear plant, and Nuclearn says the NRC treats its software as a tool, with liability resting on a person. California lawmakers and AI-policy researchers have asked for more guardrails before AI use at plants expands. It is also unclear whether the NRC's review of AI in nuclear plants will remain a priority. Evidence of benefit so far comes from vendor and utility accounts, not independent audits.
