Space-based missile defense

Sensors and interceptors in orbit that track or engage ballistic and hypersonic missiles.

Assessment

Case for · why it matters

Interceptors in orbit could engage missiles in boost, midcourse and glide phases, which ground systems cannot reach. The Space Force awarded 12 prototype OTAs worth up to $3.2B in late 2025 and early 2026, and Congress directed $5.6B of reconciliation funds to space-based intercept.

Case against · the skeptic’s view

The CBO puts Golden Dome at about $1.2 trillion over 20 years, with the space-based interceptor layer about 70% of acquisition cost, and says it would not be an impenetrable shield against a large Russian or Chinese attack. Experts cite multiple technical hurdles at the scale planned, and no on-orbit intercept had been publicly demonstrated as of these sources.
