Autonomous cargo delivery

Moving supplies with uncrewed aircraft, vehicles or vessels.

Assessment

Case for · why it matters

Dispersed Air Force operations in the Pacific need resupply at bases inside adversary missile range, and a Mitchell Institute wargame found the Air Force lacks an airlift fleet for that. Uncrewed cargo aircraft would take crews out of the most dangerous sorties.

Case against · the skeptic’s view

The Air Force has no programme of record for cargo drones, so startups are building ahead of a requirement and must fund development privately. Doctrine is unsettled on whether the service wants small 800 lb runners or aircraft that replace crewed airlifters.

Phoenix P-1000

Enigma Aerospace

Attritable autonomous cargo aircraft designed to carry 1,000 lb over 2,100+ nm, delivering by DropPod precision airdrop or STOL from unimproved strips, for GPS- and comms-degraded environments.

Development

Tacit Spear

Atropos Group

Clean-sheet autonomous twin-turbofan airlifter concept sized for about 20,000 lb of cargo (three 463L pallets) and 2,500 nm ferry range; a one-fifth-scale prototype has flown. Now developed by CHAOS Industries' Aerospace Division.
