Autonomous navigation

Navigation without continuous human control, including where satellite navigation is jammed or spoofed.

Assessment

Case for · why it matters

GPS jamming in Ukraine has made satellite navigation unreliable near the front, and autonomous navigation is what keeps drones useful there. CSIS reports that autonomous navigation raises Ukrainian drone strike success from roughly 10–20 percent to 70–80 percent.

Case against · the skeptic’s view

Fully autonomous operation is not yet present on the Ukrainian battlefield; current AI is partial in scope. Map-matching systems still drift (Theseus reported a 51.95 m median error on a long test), and reference imagery goes stale as terrain is destroyed.
