Littoral Combat Ship (LCS)

Class of fast, modular small surface combatants for near-shore operations, using swappable mission packages focused on mine countermeasures and surface warfare. It has two variants: the steel-monohull Freedom variant built by Lockheed Martin at Fincantieri Marinette Marine and the aluminum-trimaran Independence variant built by Austal USA. The program launched in 2002; ships serve in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets, with Cleveland (LCS 31) pending FY26 commissioning.
