National Institute of Standards and Technology

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is the U.S. federal measurement-science and standards institution. Its six research laboratories cover communications technology, engineering, information technology, materials measurement, physical measurement and neutron research. Its work supports cybersecurity, communications, advanced manufacturing, scientific measurement and infrastructure, with relevance to national security and the defense industrial base. NIST’s principal campuses are in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Boulder, Colorado. Its laboratories are federal organizational units, not separate commercial prime contractors. This profile covers the research organization and public campuses; individual laboratory pages distinguish their missions and official resources without treating every user or contractor as part of NIST.
