Timeline8

  1. UnveiledReported

F-15EX named in Air Force FY2020 budget request

The F-15EX designation first appeared publicly in the Air Force's FY2020 budget request, briefed to reporters on March 12, 2019, which sought eight F-15EX aircraft. Earlier coverage used the informal, unconfirmed label F-15X for Boeing's pitch.

  2. Contract awardConfirmed

Air Force awards first F-15EX production lot

The nearly $1.2 billion Boeing contract covered the first eight F-15EX aircraft and associated development and support work.

  3. First flightConfirmed

    First F-15EX flight

  4. First deliveryConfirmed

U.S. Air Force accepts first F-15EX

  5. MilestoneConfirmed

F-15EX fires its first live missile

A 40th Flight Test Squadron F-15EX fired an AIM-120D during Combat Archer. This was a weapons trial, not combat use or the first ground test of the aircraft.

  6. MilestoneConfirmed

First F-15EX reaches an operational unit in Oregon

The 142nd Wing received its first F-15EX at Portland Air National Guard Base. Earlier aircraft had been delivered for testing; this milestone does not assert a separate IOC declaration.

  7. MilestoneConfirmed

GAO assessment: F-15EX production and delivery risks

GAO’s June 2025 assessment reports full-rate production in June 2024 and initial operational capability in July 2024. The September 2024 cost estimate covered 98 aircraft (96 procurement and two development). GAO identified production-rate, parts-supply and cybersecurity risks. These are historical findings, not a current fleet count.

  8. MilestoneConfirmed

F-15EX test aircraft deploy to Kadena for training

Two 85th Test and Evaluation Squadron aircraft arrived for integration and familiarization training. This temporary visit is distinct from permanent basing plans.

Why the first award is not the recurring unit price

The initial award bundled development and support with eight aircraft. The later budget’s flyaway line is a narrower production measure; gross weapon-system cost adds the support identified in that exhibit.

Ceilings, options and purchase agreements are not spending and are never added together. Obligations are under Contracts.
