NdFeB permanent magnets

Sintered or bonded neodymium-iron-boron magnets used in electric motors, actuators and guidance systems.

Constraint

Why supply is constrained

Critical

China made 94% of sintered and 80% of bonded permanent magnets in 2024 (IEA). From 1 January 2027, DFARS 225.7018 bars DoD from buying covered magnets whose materials were mined, refined, separated, melted or produced in China, Russia, North Korea or Iran. US capacity is small but growing: MP Materials (Fort Worth, 10X), Vulcan Elements, Noveon, USA Rare Earth, e-VAC, with Neo in Estonia.

Producers7

Capacity and global share as reported; shares from different years and sources may not add up. Bars compare producers on this page only.

Dependencies

Upstream: what this input is made from or processed with. Downstream: what is made from it.
